PAST EVENTS BELOW BCA Helping Hands Holiday FOOD DRIVE Low-income families have to make choices about where and how to spend their limited resources. Often times, food choices is the easiest, most convenient area to make cuts in the family budget, especially when it comes to “extras” like holiday meals. Something that seems so simple to you and me such as a turkey for Thanksgiving, is just a burden to an already overstretched budget. And yet, one of the great joys in life is to celebrate holidays with friends and family.It is in the spirit of spreading holiday joy that Friendship House provides hundreds of traditional holiday meals every Thanksgiving and Easter to its clients.We gather turkeys at Thanksgiving along with all the traditional sides including stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, macaroni and cheese, corn and green beans, cranberry sauce, and an assortment of pies for dessert. Every Easter we do the same except substitute ham for the turkey. It’s a simple yet profound service to our neighbors – one they truly enjoy! They tell us all the time they would not be able to celebrate the Holidays without our help. Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter would just be another day in the year except for the way we help make it special. Although we do not have the capacity to operate a store, we still operate a Clothes Closet on site and give hundreds of articles of clothing away every year – including men’s, women’s, children’s, and baby clothes, hats, gloves, scarves, shoes, and boots.
